Occupied non-private dwellings

Occupied non-private dwellings are available to the public by virtue of employment, study, special care requirement, legal requirement, or recreation. They may be designed to house groups of people who are bound by either a common public objective or a common personal interest.

  • There were 6,963 occupied non-private dwellings on census night in 2006.
  • Over three-quarters of occupied non-private dwellings (76.1 percent or 5,103 dwellings) were 'other non-private dwellings', of which three-quarters (3,864 dwellings) were hotels/motels and guest accommodation.
  • Almost one-quarter (23.9 percent) of occupied non-private dwellings were institutions (eg prisons and hospitals).
