Census paints detailed picture of ethnic groups

The average Dutch person living in New Zealand is more than twice as old as the average Tuvaluan, according to the latest census figures released by Statistics New Zealand today.

For the first time, Statistics NZ has produced profiles for 143 ethnic groups recorded in the 2013 Census. The profiles give an overview of people in these ethnic groups living in New Zealand. They show that the Dutch ethnic group is one of the oldest, with a median age of 47 years. Tuvaluans are one of the youngest, with a median age of just 19 years.

Seventy-five percent of the Dutch population live in the North Island, compared with 95 percent of the Tuvaluan population. One in eight of the adult Dutch population was studying full or part-time at the time of the 2013 Census, compared with one in five of the adult Tuvaluan population.

“This probably reflects the much younger Tuvaluan population,” Census Manager Gareth Meech said.

“Thanks to people filling in their census forms, we now know more about the changing face of New Zealand. People can use the information in the profiles to better understand their own communities.”

Topics covered in the profiles include population, languages spoken, education, income, housing, and households. There’s a profile for each ethnic group with a population of at least 100 people. Comparisons with the larger ethnic groups – European, Pacific peoples, Asian, and Middle Eastern/Latin American/African – and with the total New Zealand population are also made.

2013 Census ethnic group profiles are easy to read, containing key facts, commentary, simple tables, and graphs. They expand on the information provided in the 2013 Census QuickStats about culture and identity.
