2013 Census data paints a picture of our communities

New Zealand is made up of increasingly diverse communities, 2013 Census data shows. Profiles of over 2,000 communities have been released by Statistics NZ today, painting a picture of how each is doing now and how things have changed in the last 12 years.

2013 Census QuickStats about a place offers easy access to key information about the regions, cities, districts, and neighbourhoods that make up New Zealand. It combines results from the 2013, 2006, and 2001 Censuses with other official statistics, to build a unique picture of each area.

“One of the key benefits of the census is its ability to provide accurate, detailed information about small areas,” General Manager 2013 Census Gareth Meech said. “This new publication lets Kiwis explore their communities – from who lives nearby and how they live, to local businesses and housing stock. It will also help people understand how things in their neighbourhood have changed over time.”

2013 Census QuickStats about a place contains easy-to-read profiles featuring commentary, graphs, and data tables. Topics include population, housing, age and sex, cultural diversity, families, incomes, work, and access to the Internet. Some of the same information can also be seen on a map: 2013 Census map – QuickStats about a place.

The release of this publication coincides with a series of regional seminars Statistics NZ is presenting throughout the country. Beginning next week, the seminars are free to attend and will cover key 2013 Census results for each area. For a list of locations and more information, call 0508 525 525 or visit 2013 Census regional seminars.
