Managing in a changeable operating environment

This section provides a summary of Statistics New Zealand’s activities in managing risk.

Managing risk

During 2008/09, we revised our risk management framework, which has been endorsed by the Statistics New Zealand Executive Board and the Internal Audit and Risk Management Committee. The revised framework will assist managers and staff by providing a standard approach to risk management, while also providing managers with the flexibility to manage risk appropriately. Improvements to risk management will come from standardisation, integrated gradually into the way Statistics New Zealand works, rather than through additional tasks given to managers and staff.

In our revised framework, risks are split and managed under the framework according to type:

  • strategic – high-level risks to the delivery of the department’s outcomes and outputs, and achievement of the strategic direction are managed by the Statistics New Zealand Executive Board
  • operational – risks managed at the business unit and line management levels
  • project – risks to project delivery are managed by project managers.

This revised framework will be progressively implemented from 2009/10.
