Fine delivery proves a winner in the Tongan speech competition

As part of its involvement in Statistics2013, Statistics NZ asked students to write about what Statistics2013 means to them and their people in the recent ASB Polyfest Speech Competition.

Despite being only in Year Eight, age was no barrier for Pacific Christian School student Joseph Piliu who won the Year Nine speech competition with his speech about Statistics2013. Fellow Pacific Christian School student Etuate Lau’i also did well, taking out third place despite only being in Year Seven. In his speech  Joseph spoke about what statistics had taught him from population and social information through to economic data.

Polyfest is the largest Māori and Pacific Island cultural festival of its kind in the world. It's an iconic Auckland event which is now in its 38th year. It is a celebration of traditional music and dance, and promotes cultural awareness and understanding, bringing the pride and passion of Auckland’s Māori and Pacific Island communities to life.
