Businesses react to GST and wage changes

Business Operations Survey: 2010  –  Media Release

In 2010, one-third of businesses conducted price reviews specifically due to the GST rise, and a similar proportion raised wages due to the rise in minimum wage, Statistics New Zealand said today. Results from the Business Operations Survey show businesses changed some of their pricing and wage practices to accommodate the changing business environment.

For the first time, the 2010 survey collected comprehensive information on what businesses consider when setting price and wage levels. This information provides evidence on how businesses have been affected by the current economic environment.

Every year, the survey collects information on general performance measures reported by businesses. In 2010, these results remained similar to those reported in 2009, with both sales and profitability measures showing a decrease from earlier years.

“Businesses have faced a lot of challenges and changes that affected their operating environment in the last two years,” business infrastructure and performance statistics manager Hamish Hill said. “These results shed some light on how businesses have coped with those external factors.”

Despite challenges, businesses continued to embrace new technologies to assist their operations. Broadband uptake continued to increase, with cellular Internet connections showing the greatest increase since the last time this information was collected in 2008. Use of wireless Internet connections also increased, while nearly 1 in 10 businesses used fibre to connect to the Internet.

This release presents a selection of statistics from the 2010 Business Operations Survey which covers businesses of six or more employees. For detailed tables see the Business Operations Survey: 2010 – Detailed tables available from the Statistics NZ website, www.stats.govt.nz.
