At 31 March 2012:

 
  • New Zealand's direct investment in ASEAN was $2.2 billion (up $1.5 billion from 31 March 2008).
  • Two-thirds of the $304.1 billion of foreign investment in New Zealand was from Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom. 
  • New Zealand's foreign-currency-denominated external debt was $104.3 billion (93.6 percent of which was hedged).
  • International liabilities held by the financial and insurance services industry decreased $17.0 billion from 31 March 2009.
  • Of New Zealand's international liabilities, 56.0 percent was held in New Zealand dollars (up from 49.9 percent at 31 March 2008).
  • International liabilities held by the public administration industry (the government) increased $23.9 billion from 31 March 2009.
