Insurance impact of the Canterbury earthquakes on New Zealand’s international accounts

The September 2010 earthquakes in Canterbury will impact in several ways on New Zealand's economic transactions and financial positions with the rest of the world. The impact will be reflected in the balance of payments (BOP) current account and financial account, and the related international investment position (IIP) – which is the country's balance sheet of financial assets and liabilities with the rest of the world.

This paper discusses the impact from the Canterbury earthquakes on New Zealand's international accounts. The primary impact is from reinsurance claims by New Zealand-resident insurers on non-resident reinsurers.
