Food Price Index: January 2017

Monthly change

Food prices rose 2.8 percent in the January 2017 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices rose 0.9 percent.

In January 2017 compared with December 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 8.5 percent (up 2.0 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 2.4 percent.
  • Grocery food prices rose 2.4 percent (up 1.4 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 3.6 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.2 percent.

Annual change

Food prices increased 1.4 percent in the year to January 2017.

In January 2017 compared with January 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices increased 3.1 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices decreased 1.1 percent.
  • Grocery food prices increased 1.8 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices increased 0.8 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 1.8 percent.

Key average prices

  • The average price for a kilo of apples was $5.04 in January 2017, up from $3.60 in December 2016.
  • The average price for 2 litres of standard blue-top milk was $3.47 in January 2017, up from $3.32 in December 2016.
