Monthly change

Food prices fell 0.2 percent in July 2017. However, after seasonal adjustment, food prices were flat (0.0 percent).

In July 2017 compared with June 2017:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 1.0 percent (down 1.4 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.8 percent.
  • Grocery food prices rose 0.2 percent (flat 0.0 percent movement after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 0.3 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.2 percent.

Annual change

Food prices increased 3.0 percent in the year to July 2017.

In July 2017 compared with July 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices increased 8.2 percent.
  • Grocery food prices increased 3.1 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 2.2 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices increased 1.6 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices increased 1.0 percent.

Key average prices

  • A 300-gram cucumber was $4.49 in July 2017, compared with $3.02 in June 2017, and $4.84 in July 2016.
  • A 250-gram punnet of strawberries was $5.92 in July 2017, compared with $7.71 in June 2017, and $7.52 in July 2016.
  • A kilogram of kumara was $8.39 in July 2017, compared with $8.18 in June 2017, and $3.12 in July 2016.
