Work Stoppages: March 2010 quarter

Commentary

One work stoppage ended in the March 2010 quarter. This is the lowest number of stoppages ending in a quarter for seven years.

To protect confidentiality, details of the single work stoppage that ended in the March 2010 quarter cannot be published.

Annual comparisons

Thirty work stoppages ended in the March 2010 year, compared with 22 stoppages ending in the March 2009 year.

The 30 work stoppages that ended in the March 2010 year consisted of 24 complete strikes, five partial strikes, and one lockout.

These stoppages involved 10,622 employees, losses of 18,240 person-days, and an estimated $3.1 million in wages and salaries.

The average loss in wages and salaries per employee decreased from the March 2009 year, although the average loss in person-days per employee remained unchanged.

Industry distribution of stoppages

The manufacturing industry had the highest number of stoppages in the March 2010 year, with six stoppages (20 percent of all stoppages). The health care and social assistance industry had the largest number of employees involved while the public administration and safety industry had the highest estimated loss in wages and salaries.

Sector distribution of stoppages

The public and private sectors each had 15 stoppages ending in the March 2010 year.

Public sector stoppages that ended in the March 2010 year involved 5,507 employees, and losses of 7,991 person-days of work and an estimated $1.7 million in wages and salaries.

Private sector stoppages involved 5,115 employees, and losses of 10,249 person-days of work and an estimated $1.4 million in wages and salaries for the same period. 


Resolution of stoppages

The underlying dispute was resolved in 14 of the 30 stoppages that ended in the March 2010 year. Nine of these were resolved through negotiation between the employer and employee or their representatives. Five stoppages were resolved through mediation services provided by the Department of Labour.

Sixteen of the work stoppages that ended in the March 2010 year did not have the underlying dispute resolved.


Revision

The December 2009 quarter data has been revised after receiving additional information. The revised stoppages were all complete strikes.
