We redeveloped the Household Labour Force Survey to improve the relevance and quality of our labour market statistics. Results of the redeveloped HLFS are included in Labour Market Statistics from June 2016 onwards.

New Zealand’s official statistics on:

  • the number of people employed, unemployed, and not in the labour force
  • actual and usual hours worked
  • the numbers of people in occupations and industries
  • the number of filled jobs and full-time equivalent jobs
  • total average weekly and average hourly earnings
  • total and average weekly paid hours
  • movements in base salary and ordinary time wage rates, and overtime wage rates
  • self-employment income
  • government transfer income.

Labour Market Statistics 
Replaced the Household Labour Force Survey, Quarterly Employment Survey, and Labour Cost Index (Salary and Wage Rates) releases in 2015.

Labour Market Statistics (Income)
Labour Market Statistics (Income) replaced the New Zealand Income Survey release in 2016.

Labour Market Statistics (Disability) 
In the June 2017 quarter, the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS) began including data on the disability status of respondents.

Household Labour Force Survey Estimated Working-age Population
This table provides an estimate of the usually resident, non-institutionalised, population of New Zealand aged 15 years and over. The estimate provides the benchmark figure for the number of people in the labour market each quarter.

Survey of Working Life 
Information collected every three years on New Zealanders’ employment conditions, working arrangements, and quality of working life.

Survey of Family, Income, and Employment
Find information on:

  • work, family, and household circumstances
  • income and net worth.

Linked Employer-Employee Data 
Find information on job and worker flows, and total, mean, and median earnings for continuing jobs and new hires.

These flowcharts are an additional resource for users who want a more in-depth understanding of the redeveloped Household Labour Force Survey questionnaire.
