Labour market statistics: frequently asked questions

This page answers questions about changes to the way we’re releasing information about the labour market.

Why have you changed the labour market releases?

We can provide a more complete picture of the labour market by combining the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS), Quarterly Employment Survey (QES), and Labour Cost Index (LCI) information releases. This will ensure labour market information is easier for our customers to access and understand.

Have the surveys themselves changed?

No, we’ve made no changes to the individual surveys. We are only changing the way we report the results from them.

What content is in the new labour market release?

The new release contains information from all three labour market surveys (HLFS, QES, LCI). The information is largely the same, although to keep the release short, some more-detailed information you’re used to seeing may have gone. However, you can find all results in the downloadable Excel tables on the main Labour Market Statistics information release page – whether figures are mentioned in the commentary or not.

How do I find the tables I need?

The individual tables from all three surveys are available from the main Labour Market Statistics information release page.

How do I find technical information about the surveys?

You can find some technical information about the surveys in the ‘Data quality’ section of the Labour Market Statistics information release.

Where can I find previous releases?

Previous information releases are still available. They are on the HLFS, QES, and LCI information release pages under ‘Previous releases’.

How do I quickly find figures that were in the key facts?

Most figures that were in the key facts of the individual survey releases are in the key facts section of the Labour Market Statistics information release. ‘Missing’ key facts are available in these release tables:
• Not in the labour force (Table 1, Household Labour Force Survey: December 2014 quarter – tables)
• Working-age population (Table 1, Household Labour Force Survey: December 2014 quarter – tables)
• Salary and ordinary time wage rates for all sectors, public sector, and private sector (Table 1, Labour Cost Index (Salary and Wage Rates): December 2014 quarter)

How will I know which survey the labour market release numbers come from?

We clearly define any measures we mention in the release, and the data quality and definitions sections explain which survey each measure comes from.

Where do I find the unemployment rate?

The latest unemployment rate figures are in these places:
• Employment at a glance table
• Excel tables
• Infoshare – look for ‘Household Labour Force Survey’ under ‘Work income and spending’, then select ‘Labour Force Status by Sex: Seasonally Adjusted’.

Where do I find the LCI for the private sector?

The latest LCI is in these places:
• Wages at a glance table
• Excel tables
• Infoshare – look for ‘Labour Cost Index’ under ‘Work income and spending’, then select ‘Private Sector and Industry Group’.
