Building Consents Issued: May 2016

Key facts

In May 2016, building consents were issued for 2,520 new dwellings, comprising:

  • 1,956 houses (the highest number since August 2007)
  • 327 townhouses, flats, and units
  • 121 retirement village units
  • 116 apartments.

The seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented fell 0.9 percent in May 2016, following a rise of 6.8 percent in April. The seasonally adjusted number has fluctuated in recent months, and the trend is flat.

The actual value of building work consented in May 2016 was $1.6 billion. For May 2016 compared with May 2015:

  • residential work was up $209 million (24 percent) to $1,078 million
  • non-residential work was up $5 million (1.1 percent) to $492 million.
