Key facts
  • The services sector used more than 75,000 terajoules of energy in 2013 (almost 20 percent of New Zealand’s total estimated business energy use).
  • Electricity, petrol, and diesel were the most important energy sources (over 75 percent of its need).
  • Public administration and safety, and rental, hiring, and real estate services had the highest energy use (almost 21,000 TJs).
  • More than 60 percent of businesses surveyed had at least one energy saving initiative in place.

This is the second time we’ve collected information on energy use in the services sector. It’s part of a three-year cycle for an economy-wide collection.
