Retail Trade Survey: January 2009

Highlights

For January 2009 compared with December 2008 (on a seasonally adjusted basis):

  • Total retail sales decreased 1.1 percent ($62 million).
  • Core retail sales increased 0.3 percent ($13 million).
  • Motor vehicle retailing sales decreased 11.0 percent ($66 million).
  • Automotive fuel retailing sales decreased 2.6 percent ($14 million).
  • Supermarket and grocery store sales increased 1.7 percent ($20 million).

The total retail sales trend is in decline, falling 2.9 percent since January 2008.
