Retail Trade Survey: May 2009

Highlights

For May 2009 compared with April 2009 (on a seasonally adjusted basis):

  • Core retail sales rose 1.6 percent ($65 million).
  • Vehicle-related sales fell 1.8 percent ($25 million).
  • Total retail sales rose 0.8 percent ($41 million).
  • Supermarket and grocery stores, and clothing and softgoods retailing by far had the largest increases.
  • The biggest decreases were in automotive fuel and motor vehicle retailing.

The total retail sales trend has been falling since January 2008 but has flattened in the last four months.
