Accommodation Survey: May 2015  –  Media Release

National guest nights for May 2015 were 5.5 percent higher than in May 2014, Statistics New Zealand said today.

"As in the previous three months, most of the rise for May was from international guest nights," business indicators manager Neil Kelly said. "Two-thirds of the increase in international guest nights occurred in the South Island."

For May 2015, compared with May 2014:

  • Domestic guest nights were up 2.3 percent, and international guest nights were up 11 percent.
  • North Island guest nights were up 3.9 percent, and South Island guest nights were up 8.5 percent.
  • Nine of the 12 regional areas had increased guest nights.
  • All four accommodation types had increased guest nights.

For the year ended May 2015, national guest nights were up 5.2 percent from the May 2014 year.

The trend for national guest nights continued to rise. Seasonally adjusted guest nights rose 2.6 percent in May, following a fall in April.

The Accommodation Survey collects data for guests staying in hotels, motels, backpacker accommodation, and holiday parks in New Zealand each month.
