Industry overview

The screen industry is made up of four main sectors:

  • screen production (including production and post-production) 
  • television broadcasting 
  • film and video distribution 
  • film exhibition.

Businesses may work in multiple sectors in the screen industry.

Information is for the 2008 financial year, and for the 2008 financial year compared with the 2007 financial year unless otherwise stated. 

  • 2,223 businesses were active in the screen industry and most (2,106) were active in the screen production sector. 
  • Within the screen production sector, 21 percent (153) more businesses were involved in post-production than in 2007.

Salary and Wages in the Screen Industry

  • Most screen industry businesses were located in Auckland (55 percent) and Wellington (29 percent), as they were in 2007 and 2006.

Businesses are asked to indicate which activities they have undertaken during the year, and may list any number of activities they are involved in. 

  • 1,740 businesses were involved in film and video production activities, a 6 percent increase. 
  • The number of businesses involved in cable and subscription programming increased 50 percent, from 30 to 45. 
  • 543 businesses were active in both post-production, and film and video production.
