Goods and Services Trade by Country: Year ended December 2015

  • New Zealand's total trade balance was a surplus of $2.5 billion in the year ended December 2015.
  • Total exports of goods and services were $69.3 billion, while total imports were $66.9 billion.
  • The top export destination was Australia, with $12.9 billion of exports, followed by China ($11.3 billion).
  • The main sources of imports to New Zealand were the European Union ($12.1 billion) and Australia ($11.3 billion).
  • Dairy remained the main export commodity, earning New Zealand $11.5 billion in 2015, while travel exports earned $9.7 billion.
  • New Zealand had a negative trade balance with the European Union in 2015 ($3.4 billion).
  • Imports of electrical machinery and equipment from China were $1.9 billion, up $389 million from 2014. This included imports of mobile phones.
