Goods and Services Trade by Country: Year ended June 2016

Key facts
  • New Zealand's total trade balance was a surplus of $3.6 billion in the year ended June 2016.
  • Total exports of goods and services were $70.9 billion, while total imports were $67.2 billion.
  • The top export destination was Australia ($13.0 billion), followed by China ($12.1 billion).
  • The main sources of imports to New Zealand were the European Union ($12.1 billion) and Australia ($11.3 billion).
  • New Zealand sent $2.6 billion of dairy products to China in the June 2016 year – our largest export earner. This was up from $2.3 billion in the previous year.
  • Electrical machinery and equipment from China ($2.0 billion); and vehicles, parts, and accessories from both Japan ($1.9 billion) and the European Union ($1.8 billion) were our three largest import expenses.  

For this release, we have updated the machine-readable zipped csv file to include totals for all countries for a selection of services categories.
