Overseas Merchandise Trade: December 2010

Highlights

December 2010 quarter:

Values are seasonally adjusted and compared with the September 2010 quarter unless otherwise stated.

  • Exports increased 3.1 percent to $11.1 billion.
  • Meat and edible offal products recorded the largest increase in export values.
  • Imports increased 4.2 percent to $10.9 billion.
  • The trade balance was a surplus of $275 million (2.5 percent of exports), the fifth consecutive quarterly trade surplus.

 

December 2010 month:

Values are actual and compared with the December 2009 month unless otherwise stated.

  • Exports were up $390 million (11 percent) to $3.8 billion.
  • Milk powder, butter, and cheese exports recorded the largest increase.
  • Imports were up $614 million (18 percent) to $4.1 billion.
  • Aircraft and parts recorded the largest increase in import commodities.
  • The trade balance was a deficit of $250 million (6.6 percent of exports).
