Overseas Merchandise Trade: February 2011

Highlights

For the month of February 2011, compared with February 2010:

  • Merchandise exports were up $550 million (17 percent) to $3.9 billion.
  • The milk powder, butter, and cheese commodity group was the major contributor to the increase in export commodities, dominated by unsweetened whole milk powder.
  • Merchandise imports were up $684 million (23 percent) to $3.7 billion.
  • The one-off importation of aircraft led the increase in imports.
  • There was a trade surplus of $194 million (5.0 percent of the value of exports).
  • The trend for exports continues to achieve new highs. The trend for imports has increased strongly since October 2010 but is still  8.7 percent below its peak in September 2008.
