Overseas Merchandise Trade: July 2017

July 2017 monthly values are actual and compared with July 2016.

Milk powder, butter, and cheese lead exports rise

  • Goods exports rose $668 million (17 percent) to $4.6 billion.
  • Exports to China rose $345 million (51 percent) to $1.0 billion.
  • Milk powder, butter, and cheese led the rise – up $426 million (51 percent) to $1.3 billion.

Vehicles lead imports rise

  • Goods imports rose $232 million (5.4 percent) to $4.5 billion.
  • Vehicles, parts, and accessories led the rise – up $154 million (25 percent) to $768 million. Passenger motor cars exceeded $500 million for the second consecutive month ($502 million).

 

Rare trade surplus in July 2017

  • Monthly trade surplus was $85 million (1.8 percent of exports).
  • Only the 11th surplus for a July month since 1960.

 

Annual goods exports exceed $50 billion

  • Annual goods exports were valued at $50.5 billion, the first time they have exceeded $50 billion since December 2014.
  • The annual trade deficit reduced to $3.2 billion in July, down from $3.6 billion in June 2017.

Seasonally adjusted exports and imports rise

  • Seasonally adjusted exports rose 6.7 percent in July, compared with June 2017. The trend has risen 15 percent since its most-recent low point in September 2016.
  • Seasonally adjusted imports rose 2.0 percent in July, compared with June 2017. The trend has risen for the past 14 months and was 9.9 percent higher than in May 2016.
