Overseas Merchandise Trade: June 2011

Highlights

June 2011 quarter:

Values are seasonally adjusted and compared with the March 2011 quarter unless otherwise stated.

  • Exports increased 4.5 percent to $12.2 billion.
  • Dairy products and meat accounted for nearly 80 percent of the increase.
  • The trend for exports has reached a new high.
  • Imports fell 1.0 percent to $11.8 billion.
  • The trend for imports has generally been increasing since September 2009.
  • There was a trade surplus of $362 million (3.0 percent of exports). 

June 2011 month: 

Values are actual and compared with the June 2010 month unless otherwise stated. 

  • Exports were up $176 million (4.7 percent) to $4.0 billion.
  • Milk powder, butter, and cheese exports recorded the largest increase.
  • Imports were up $167 million (4.7 percent) to $3.7 billion.
  • Petroleum and products imports recorded the largest increase.
  • There was a trade surplus of $230 million (5.8 percent of exports).
