New Zealand internet is going mobile

New Zealand had 3.8 million mobile phones with active internet connections at 30 June 2017, Stats NZ said today. This was up 11 percent from the same time in 2016. Meanwhile, the number of home broadband connections decreased 3 percent.

Mobile phone internet usage increased 104 percent from June 2016, to 6,453,000 gigabytes in June 2017. This is around 1,700 megabytes for each mobile phone connection, compared with 900 megabytes in June 2016.

“With 1,700 megabytes, you can listen to 40 hours of music, look at 700 photos, or view two hours of videos,” business performance senior manager Daria Kwon said.

These figures come from the annual Internet Service Provider Survey, which is sent to all internet service providers in New Zealand.
