Marriages, Civil Unions, and Divorces: Year ended December 2014

In 2014:

Marriages

  • 20,125 marriages were registered to New Zealand residents – of these, 486 were same-sex marriages.
  • There were 13,958 first marriages, 6,046 remarriages, and 121 couples (both same-sex and opposite-sex) who transferred their civil union to a marriage.
  • The general marriage rate was 11.6 marriages and civil unions per 1,000 mean estimated population aged 16+ who are not married or in a civil union (transfers to and from marriage or civil union are excluded).
  • An additional 2,898 marriages were registered to overseas residents – of these, 391 were same-sex marriages and 29 couples (both same-sex and opposite) transferred their civil union to marriage.

Civil unions

  • 51 civil unions were registered to New Zealand residents, down from 187 in 2013 and 303 in 2012. 
  • Only about 4 out of 10 resident couples registering a civil union in 2014 were same-sex couples compared with 8 out of 10 in 2005–12.
  • 12 civil unions were registered to overseas residents, down from 46 in 2013 and 87 in 2012.

Divorces

  • 8,171 married and 63 civil union couples were granted divorces in New Zealand.
  • There were 9.1 divorces for every 1,000 estimated existing marriages and civil unions.
