International Travel and Migration: October 2016

Key facts

In October 2016 compared with October 2015: 

  • Visitor arrivals (260,200) were up 30,900.
  • New Zealand residents departed on 231,000 trips overseas, 14,000 more than in October 2015.
  • Permanent and long-term arrivals (11,700) were up 500.
  • Permanent and long-term departures (3,800) were up 100.

In the October 2016 year:

  • Visitor arrivals numbered 3.42 million, up 358,100 or 12 percent.
  • New Zealand residents departed on 2.55 million trips overseas, 7 percent more than in the October 2015 year.
  • Permanent and long-term arrivals (126,100) were up 6,000 or 5 percent.
  • Permanent and long-term departures (55,800) were down 1,800.
  • Unadjusted annual net gain of migrants reached a record 70,300, up 7,800.
