International Travel and Migration: January 2009

Highlights
  • Visitor arrivals (244,000) were down 4 percent from January 2008 (253,500).
  • There were fewer visitors from the United States (down 5,100), Korea (down 4,500), and the United Kingdom (down 4,400), but more from China (up 3,400).
  • New Zealand-resident departures (105,100) were down 5 percent from January 2008 (111,200).
  • New Zealand residents departed on fewer trips to Fiji (down 1,700), but there were more trips to Australia (up 3,200).
  • Permanent and long-term arrivals exceeded departures by 700 on a seasonally adjusted basis
