An introduction to international migration by region: 1996–2010

This article outlines the subnational area-of-residence detail collected for permanent and long-term (PLT) migrants arriving into and departing from New Zealand. The article includes a discussion of data quality, followed by sections of analysis that highlight key features observed during the 15 years between the years ended June 1996 and 2010.

Analysis is largely restricted to total flows, and flows by citizenship, to and from each region. Planned future articles will look in more detail at international migrants to and from each region, including characteristics such as occupation, age, country of last/next residence, and visa type.
