National Family and Household Projections: 2013(base)–2038

National family and household projections indicate future changes in the number and composition of families and households.

The projections indicate that between 2013 and 2038:

  • The number of households is projected to increase by an average of 1.1 percent a year, from an estimated 1.65 million households in 2013 to 2.14 million by 2038 (an increase of 496,000).  
  • One-person households are projected to increase by an average of 1.6 percent a year, from 393,000 in 2013 to 583,000 in 2038.
  • The average size of households will decrease to 2.50 people by 2038, from 2.64 people in 2013.
  • The number of families and households will grow faster than the population, which is projected to increase by an average of 0.9 percent a year between 2013 and 2038.
  • The number of families is projected to increase by an average of 1.0 percent a year, from an estimated 1.25 million families at 30 June 2013 to 1.60 million by 2038 (an increase of 356,000).
  • Couple-without-children families will increase by an average of 1.4 percent a year. They will remain the most common family type.
