Stats NZ is developing well-being indicators, Indicators Aotearoa New Zealand - Ngā Tūtohu Aotearoa, to track New Zealand’s progress. As the well-being indicators have similar aims to the NZ Progress Indicators and NZ Social Indicators, we are reviewing the future of these existing indicators.

We measure this because freedom from discrimination is a core principle of democratic societies. People and groups who are discriminated against may not be able to participate fully in society. Discrimination also has negative effects on mental and physical well-being.
The proportion of people who’ve been treated unfairly or had something nasty done to them because of the group they belonged to, or seemed to belong to.
