The mathematics of electoral district allocation in New Zealand based on the outcome of the 2006 Census and Māori Electoral Option 2006

This document outlines New Zealand’s electoral district allocation as specified in the Electoral Act 1993. The paper describes how concepts from the Electoral Act 1993 are implemented in the Government Statistician’s electoral calculations, using data from the 2006 Census and Māori Electoral Option 2006.

We prepared the information for an unpublished report to the Electoral Commission in September 2006. This 2006 report is based on the methodological report, The mathematics of electoral district allocation in New Zealand, published in 2000.

In 2013 we updated the 2006 paper and published The mathematics of electorate allocation in New Zealand based on the outcome of the 2013 Census and Māori Electoral Option 2013.

This report provides continuity in the reporting of allocation of electoral districts in New Zealand that occurs after each population census.

To read the report, download or print the PDF and tables from 'Available files' above. If you have problems viewing the files, see Opening files and PDFs.
