Abstract

The two Canterbury earthquakes caused widespread destruction and loss of life to the Canterbury region. This led to disruptions in the collection of the Household Labour Force Survey (HLFS). The 22 February 2011 earthquake was much more devastating than the 4 September 2010 earthquake, and had a greater effect on the collection activities of the HLFS in the Canterbury region.

The September earthquake resulted in a small loss in sample for the Canterbury region of 15 percent. In comparison, the February earthquake resulted in a much larger loss in sample of 36 percent. Due to the large sample loss from the February earthquake, we had to adjust the HLFS estimation process for the March 2011 quarter.
