Abstract

This paper reports on the results from the 2012 Survey of Working Life. The survey was conducted as a supplement to the Household Labour Force Survey in the December 2012 quarter. It aims to provide reliable information to monitor changes in the employment conditions, working arrangements, and job quality of employed New Zealanders, and to better understand the reasons for and implications of these employment patterns. One of several significant information gaps the survey is designed to address is the topic of temporary work.

This paper reports findings from the Survey of Working Life about temporary employees and their jobs, comparing temporary and permanent employees and different types of temporary work such as casual, fixed-term, and seasonal work. Among the questions it addresses are the demographic characteristics of temporary workers, why they are in temporary rather than permanent jobs, the types of occupations and industries in which they work, how flexible their work arrangements are, and their employment outcomes as measured by factors such as hours of work, job tenure, earnings, and job satisfaction. The findings reveal some important differences between temporary and permanent employees, but also some notable differences between various types of temporary workers.
