Agricultural Production Survey – information for farmers

Why are you carrying out this survey?

Agriculture is New Zealand’s largest industry and export earner. Agriculture, horticulture, and forestry products earn more than half of New Zealand’s total export income. It is important to run a regular survey so that we can identify any changes in the agriculture sector.

The main purpose of the Agricultural Production Survey is to provide up-to-date and reliable statistics on agricultural and forestry activity. These statistics are used to:

  • inform trade negotiations on issues such as increased access and lower tariffs
  • forecast work for the agriculture sector
  • prepare policy advice, including the potential effects of policies on primary producers
  • monitor the state of the agriculture sector and its contribution to the New Zealand economy
  • inform planning and investment decisions by central and local government and the private sector
  • fulfil duties and commitments to various international organisations of which New Zealand is a member.

Agricultural statistics are used by the farming and industrial sectors, government, researchers, and community groups.

Who takes part in the survey? How did you select me?

Approximately 30,000 of the 70,000 businesses involved in agricultural or forestry production are selected to participate in the survey. These are individuals or farming enterprises involved in livestock farming or forestry.

When do you carry out the survey?

The survey is carried out every year.

How can I complete the survey questionnaire?

Your questionnaire can be completed online. This is a quick, easy, and secure way to complete your survey. See 'Available files' on this page for information about completing your online questionnaire. However, you can request a paper copy of the survey if you are unable to use the online questionnaire.
