Business Register Update Survey – information for participants

Why are you carrying out this survey?

The purpose of this survey is to update our Business Register. Using a single centralised frame, or register, for all Statistics NZ business and economic surveys allows us to integrate different surveys and data sources, and ensures that classifications and statistical unit definitions are applied consistently.

What is the Business Register?

The Business Register is a comprehensive database of New Zealand businesses. It records details such as names and addresses, predominant type of industrial activity performed, institutional sector, employment levels, and the degree of overseas ownership. Its primary purpose is as a statistical register or frame for the various business surveys operated by Statistics NZ.

The survey asks for industry, business location(s), employment numbers, balance date, classification information, business structure information, business contact details, business life cycle information, and overseas activity information.

Who takes part in the survey? How did you select me?

For annual surveys:

We select approximately 13,500 of the around 500,000 medium-sized or large private and public sector businesses and organisations that produce goods and services in New Zealand and are registered with Inland Revenue.

For monthly surveys:

The target population is new businesses that are registered with Inland Revenue, and businesses that have recently been reactivated if they have significant level of economic activity. Those selected to participate are businesses with significant turnover and/or employment. Approximately 50 businesses are surveyed each month.

When do you carry out the survey?

The survey takes place monthly and annually.

  • For annual surveys: Large businesses are included annually, and medium-sized businesses are typically included every third year.
  • For monthly surveys: One-off collection for each new or reactivated business registered with Inland Revenue.

How can I complete the survey questionnaire?

You can complete the survey questionnaire by filling in an online, paper, or electronic (Excel) questionnaire. See 'Available files' on this page for information about completing your online questionnaire.

What do I need to complete the survey online?

Most computers and browsers can be used to complete the survey online. The survey has been tested and optimised for the following internet browsers:

  • Internet Explorer 10 and 11
  • Firefox 47.0 and above
  • Google Chrome v51.0.27 and above
  • Safari 5.1.7 and above

The minimum security requirement is using an SSL enabled browser capable of 128 bit encryption.
