Commodity Data Collection Survey – information for participants

Why are you carrying out this survey?

We carry out this survey to collect information to:

  • balance the production and expenditure estimates of gross domestic product (GDP) within an input-output framework
  • determine the supply and use of commodities by industries
  • update lower-level weights for the business price indexes
  • use as deflations in producing a chain-volume measure of GDP.

Who takes part in the survey? How did you select me?

The target population is all New Zealand businesses. We select approximately 3,500 business units to participate throughout the eight-year redevelopment cycle.

A selection of businesses in each industry will be surveyed once in that time. A business reporting unit is assigned a single industry, and most industries will only be surveyed once in the eight-year development cycle.

Your business may be selected if the industry your business is identified with is selected to participate during the eight-year redevelopment cycle period. You will be asked about the detailed breakdown of the types of goods and services that businesses buy and sell.

When do you carry out the survey?

This is a rolling data collection. We will be surveying businesses once every eight years.

How can I complete the survey questionnaire?

You’ll complete the survey questionnaire by filling in a paper form.
