Commodity Price Survey – information for participants

Why are you carrying out this survey?

We carry out this survey to collect information on commodity prices over time. The comparative change or movement in commodity prices is used to calculate business price indexes.

Who takes part in the survey? How did you select me?

Businesses across all sectors of the New Zealand economy take part in this survey.

Any business can be selected to participate – we select approximately 2,200. Your business may have been selected because:

  • all businesses in the industry are ordered by total revenue (size), and we select a representative from the industry to represent each grouping of similarly sized businesses
  • your business is a representative of other businesses producing or providing the same commodity, or unique in producing or providing a commodity different to that of other, similar businesses.

To accurately track the change in prices, we need to survey same participants each quarter.

Unfortunately, we can’t tell you exactly how long your business will be included in the survey sample for. This is because reselection of survey participants for any particular industry varies according to how much change occurs within that industry.

When do you carry out the survey?

The survey is carried out every quarter – in February, May, August, and November.

How can I complete the survey questionnaire?

You can complete the survey questionnaire by filling in a paper or electronic (Excel) form.
