Consumer price surveys – information for participants

 Consumer price surveys include:

  • Retail outlets (prices of goods collected in stores)
  • Used cars
  • Rent
  • Rent update
  • Postal surveys (all other consumer price surveys – eg dental services, construction, lawnmowing).

Why are you carrying out these surveys?

We carry out these surveys to collect information for the consumers price index (CPI). The CPI is a measure of price change of goods and services purchased by private New Zealand households; and inflation.

Who takes part in the surveys? How did you select me?

All businesses that supply goods and services and private households in New Zealand can be selected to participate in consumer price surveys.

  •  2,800 retail outlets may be selected from the 12 pricing centres throughout the country: Whangarei, Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Napier-Hastings, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin, and Invercargill.

The retail outlet selection is reviewed every six years. Between reviews, retail outlets can be added to be surveyed to replace those that have closed or for other reasons.

  • 2,400 other businesses and landlords that supply goods and services to households may be selected throughout the country. The selection of businesses is periodically reviewed.

Thus, if your business supplies goods and services, or if you are a landlord with rental properties, you may be selected to participate.

When do you carry out the survey?

Retail outlets are visited weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually by price collectors. Price collectors report to retail staff when visiting stores, then locate specific products, and collect prices. They may request assistance from staff when surveyed products are no longer stocked and they need guidance on suitable replacement products.

Other businesses and landlords are sent postal questionnaires monthly, quarterly, or annually.

We collect some information electronically, and in other cases use administrative collections (eg retail transaction data or ‘scanner data’).

How can I complete the survey questionnaire?

You can complete the survey questionnaire by filling in a paper form.

There’s no questionnaire for retail outlets. Prices of goods in retail outlets are collected by field staff using handheld tablets.
