Help using CPI visualisations

How to interact with CPI visualisations

Explore the graphs in the Consumers price index visualisation to see the changes in price and relative importance of goods and services in the CPI basket.

You can also explore the graphs in the CPI tradables and non-tradables visualisation to see changes in the prices and relative importance of the goods and services in the CPI basket, broken down by tradable and non-tradables.

On a laptop or desktop

The bar graph shows the quarterly percentage change of the selected subcategory of the CPI basket. Hover over a bar for more detail, and click to select a different time period.

The pie chart shows the percentage change between the time periods selected on the slider bar at the bottom of the web page. The longer the slice, the larger the percentage increase. The wider the slice, the more important that subcategory is to the overall index (angle = CPI weight).

Click on a slice to display its subcategories, or click on the white area surrounding the pie chart to go back up a level. Click the Zoom out button to go back to the All groups CPI. The subcategories in the visualisations are the 11 CPI groups, 45 subgroups, and 108 classes. In some cases at group, subgroup and class level the classification may be either all tradable or all non-tradable so no further breakdown is available.

Use the slider bar to change time periods. Do this by either clicking on a time period or dragging one of the time period flags.

Please use landscape mode.

About the weights

The weights shown in the visualisation relate to the earlier of the two time periods on the slider bar. The CPI was reweighted at the June 2006, 2008, and 2011 quarters. For other quarters, the weights have been 'price updated' to the earlier time period by applying price change for each subcategory from the previous reweight quarter to the earlier of the two time periods on the slider bar, then rescaling so they add to 100 percent.
